Greetings, community! 🐧

I'm a big believer in open-source software, and I'm always looking for tools that are community-driven and completely free (as in freedom and as in beer!). I want to move away from proprietary stuff for my creative projects.

I'm currently trying out a few different options for free writing software that are open source. Manuskript looks incredibly powerful for outlining, though the interface feels a bit dated. Ghostwriter is beautiful for Markdown, and bibisco seems great for novel planning, though I think its free version is limited. Which open-source project do you think is the hidden gem?

Which one has a great community behind it and is actively developed? I'd love to support a project by using it and giving feedback. Let's share the open-source love! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You've done your homework. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Manuskript is powerful and its development is decently active , but the interface can feel clunky.
  • bibisco is a gem for character and structure, but the free "Community Edition" is less actively developed than the paid version.
  • Ghostwriter is beautiful and actively maintained for Markdown-focused writing , but it's not a full novel-planning suite.
For a hidden gem, I'd suggest keeping an eye on Epicenter . It's a brand new, local-first, open-source project aiming to build a whole ecosystem of tools that share data. It's very early, but the vision is exciting!
