Why I'm embracing the structure of a military college

When I told my friends I was considering the University of North Georgia, they were confused. “Isn't that a military school?” they asked. “Do you want to join the military?” I'm not joining the corps. But I'm not afraid of structure.

I need structure. In high school, I was easily distracted. I did well enough, but I could have done better. I need an environment that pushes me. A student review said: “UNG has rules. It's not a free-for-all. For some people, that's a relief.” That's me.

I want real-world experience. The criminal justice professors have worked in law enforcement. One reviewer said: “My professor was an FBI agent. He didn't just teach theory; he told us what it's actually like.”

I'm not joining the corps, but I respect it. A student wrote: “The cadets set a tone. The campus is serious, focused. It's not a party school. If you want to study, this is the place.”

The Dahlonega campus is beautiful. Reviews mention the “historic buildings, mountain views, and small-town feel.” I can focus there.

I'm not choosing UNG in spite of the structure. I'm choosing it because of it. I need a place that will hold me accountable, push me to be better, and connect me to people who have done what I want to do. 🌲

I'm at North Georgia right now. Non-cadet. Sophomore.

The structure saved my GPA. In high school, I procrastinated everything. Here, I can't. There's formation at 7 AM (not for me, but I hear it). There's expectations. The library is quiet. People actually study.

The "not a party school" thing is real. There are parties. But it's not like Athens or Statesboro. If you want to drink every weekend, this isn't your place. If you want to learn, it is.

The criminal justice program is excellent. Most professors have real experience. One of mine worked for the GBI. Another was a sheriff. They don't just teach cases. They taught me how to talk to people in crisis.

The mountain views never get old. Neither does the small-town coffee shop.

You'll fit in here. Not because you're military. Because you're serious. That's what UNG rewards. Seriousness.
