Hi everyone! I'm an Education major hoping to teach elementary school. I firmly believe that we need to start fostering environmental literacy early, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to introduce "sustainability writing" to young children.
I don't want to scare them with climate doom, but I also want to be honest and help them build a connection to the world. I'm collecting ideas for my teaching portfolio. I’m thinking of things like: writing thank-you letters to a tree in the schoolyard, creating persuasive posters to encourage composting in the cafeteria, or keeping nature journals to observe seasonal changes.
These feel like gentle, positive ways in. Does anyone have experience with this age group? What writing activities have you seen that spark joy and a sense of care in kids without overwhelming them? I'd be so grateful for any creative ideas!
