UGA vs. Georgia Tech: Help me choose my vibe (and my major).

I'm a high school senior in-state, and I've been lucky enough to get into both UGA and Georgia Tech. I thought this would be a good problem to have, but honestly, it's just stressing me out. They're so different, and I feel like I'm choosing between two totally different lives.

The dilemma: I'm not 100% set on my major. I like science, I like problem-solving, but I also like writing and humanities. I'm interested in maybe environmental science, or public policy, or even architecture? I'm all over the place.

Here's my pro-con list so far:

Georgia Tech (Atlanta):
  • Pros: Incredible reputation, especially for STEM. If I do figure out I want to be an engineer or CS person, this is the place. The co-op program is amazing. Atlanta is a cool city with tons of opportunities. Alumni network is strong.
  • Cons: Intense. Like, really intense. I've heard horror stories about the workload and the curve. Also, the gender ratio thing is real—I've heard it can be a weird social vibe. Not as much of a "traditional" campus feel.
UGA (Athens):
  • Pros: Athens is an amazing college town. The music scene, the downtown, the vibe. More of a "classic" college experience with football and school spirit. More flexibility to explore majors—I could try environmental science, or poli sci, or even landscape architecture. Seems easier to have a social life.
  • Cons: Big. Like, huge classes. Is it easy to get lost in the crowd? Is the education as rigorous as Tech's? Will I have the same job prospects if I don't do a super STEM-y major?
My heart says UGA for the lifestyle, but my brain (and my parents) say Tech for the career prospects. Anyone been in this position? How did you choose? Does the "fun" of UGA outweigh the "prestige" of Tech? Help!

The gender ratio thing at Tech is no joke. I visited and it was like 70% dudes. The vibe was... intense. Competitive in a not-fun way. UGA felt warmer, more balanced. People actually talked to each other instead of staring at laptops.

Also, environmental science exists at both, but the approach is different. Tech is very technical/engineering-focused. UGA has more ecology/policy angles. Match the program to your interests, not just the school name.

Yeah it's hard. Like, really hard sometimes. But that's kind of the point? You come out of here with skills that actually matter. Employers know what a Tech degree means. My cousin went to UGA for environmental science and honestly? She struggled to find something after graduation.

The gender ratio thing is overblown btw. Yeah it's more guys but there's tons of women in engineering now and you'll meet people at other schools in Atlanta anyway.

If you're not sure about your major though, that's the real issue. Tech is brutal if you're not committed to the STEM path. You'll waste time and money. So maybe ask yourself—are you willing to work your ass off for four years? If yes, come to Tech. If you want balance, go to UGA.

Not trying to be harsh just real with you 👍
