I'm a math major. I like formulas, steps, clear instructions. Essay writing is the opposite of that and I hate it. My professor said "start with an outline" but didn't say how.

I found a template online that actually makes sense:

Introduction:
  • Hook (first sentence)
  • Background (2-3 sentences)
  • Thesis statement (last sentence)
Body paragraphs (3-4):
  • Topic sentence
  • Evidence
  • Analysis
  • Link to next paragraph
Conclusion:
  • Restate thesis (new words)
  • Summarize main points
  • Final thought
Finally! A formula I can follow! 🧮

I'm a STEM major too and the formula approach is the only way I survive writing. Your template is perfect. One thing I'd add: do the outline FIRST, then research. People often research first and then try to fit their research into an outline, but that's backwards. Start with your argument (thesis) and your main points, then find evidence that supports them. If you can't find evidence, adjust your argument. But having the structure first keeps you focused and prevents research rabbit holes.

Also, for each body paragraph, think P.E.E.L.:
  • Point (topic sentence)
  • Evidence (quote/data)
  • Explanation (analysis)
  • Link (transition)
Same idea as yours but with an extra step. Works great!
