I'm a junior at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, and I swear, we're the state's best-kept secret. People always ask, "Wait, is that the party school?" (No, that's GCSU's reputation from decades ago, it's not like that now). Or "Isn't that just a teacher's college?" (Also no). Let me set the record straight.
We're Georgia's public liberal arts university. That means we focus on undergraduate teaching, small classes, and critical thinking. My political science classes have maybe 20 people. We actually debate things. My professors know my name and my plans after graduation.
Milledgeville is the perfect college town. It's not Athens, but that's the point. It's big enough to have great restaurants, coffee shops, and a cool historic downtown, but small enough that you run into people you know. The campus is beautiful, with these old buildings and massive oak trees.
The community is tight. Because we're smaller (about 6,000 undergrads), you actually know people. Greek life exists but doesn't dominate. There's always something happening on front campus—frisbee, hammocks, people just hanging out.
The honors program is legit. If you want a challenge, GCSU has a strong honors college with cool interdisciplinary seminars.
We're close to everything. An hour to Atlanta, an hour to Macon, two hours to the coast. Easy weekend trips.
