Hey there, fellow Georgia learners and mentors! I've been helping young minds navigate through their college choices as student counselor at Columbus State University, so thought why not extend helping hand here too. Right now, I'm keen to delve into the real-life experiences of those who chose Nursing as their major at the University of West Georgia.

It's one of those professions that's calling more than just career choice. It takes special kind of person to walk this path, doesn't it? But before jumping in head-first, it's always best to weigh the pros and cons of the program you're considering. And what better way to do that than hearing straight from the horse's mouth! That's where y'all come in. What are some real pluses about nursing at WG? Is the faculty supportive? Are there opportunities for practical learning experiences?

How about career guidance once you're ready to take on the world? And hey, don't hold back on sharing any challenges you faced. Was the course work excessively demanding or rigorous? Were there enough resources available? Did you feel prepared when stepping into the professional field? Just few months back, had this incredibly determined student who wanted to apply for Georgia State University’s psychology program but was hesitant due to some unfavorable reviews online.

After getting her in touch with past graduates who shared honest accounts of their journey there, she gained confidence and decided to go for it!

I'm Savannah, parent at Kennesaw State University, and love being involved in campus events. The hands-on experience and supportive faculty seem like big pros. Any students or parents here with more insights?

I'm transferring from GPC (well, it's Perimeter now) next fall and I'm super nervous but excited. 😬

Stephanie's review mentioned using ratemyprofessor and not procrastinating—solid advice . I've already started looking up the core courses like NURS 3100 and 3200 to get a head start .

To answer your question about career guidance: I talked to an advisor last month and she said they have dedicated NCLEX prep courses (NURS 4490) and help with job placement. That alone makes me feel more prepared! Does anyone know if the clinical placements are mostly in Carrollton or do they send you all over west Georgia?

Let me give you the real rundown:

Pros:
  • Clinical placements are solid—you're not just sitting in classrooms. I've been in actual hospitals since sophomore year.
  • The faculty actually cares. Like, they know your name and notice if you're struggling.
  • Affordable tuition compared to a lot of other Georgia schools. My loans won't be as scary as my friends at private universities.
Cons:
  • It's competitive to get into the actual nursing program (the "upper division"). Not everyone who starts as a pre-nursing major makes it.
  • The NCLEX pass rate fluctuates—last I checked it was around 82%, which is decent but not top-tier. Some schools in Georgia are higher.
Overall? I'm glad I chose UWG. You get a solid education without the massive debt.

The program is rigorous but fair. You will be exhausted. You will cry. You will question your life choices around exam time. But you will also make incredible friends who understand exactly what you're going through.

Faculty are mostly amazing. Some are tough, but it's because they're preparing you for real patients, not just exams. The clinical placements are excellent—you get experience in med-surg, peds, psych, OB, and critical care.

The biggest challenge? Time management. You cannot procrastinate in nursing school. The material builds on itself constantly. Tell your students to start strong and stay strong. Also, self-care isn't optional—it's survival. DeVane, a senior, said she treats herself weekly and prioritizes sleep when she can. That's real advice.
