I've lived in Georgia my whole life and always thought it was just Georgia and Georgia Tech. Then I started digging into college football in the state and my mind was completely blown. There are actually 26 college football programs across all divisions here, and they range from national powerhouses to small schools you've probably never heard of.
At the NCAA Division I FBS level, we've got five teams. Obviously Georgia and Georgia Tech are the headliners—Georgia just won the national title and returns Gunner Stockton at quarterback with a loaded roster . But don't sleep on Georgia State (they play in the Sun Belt and have a cool stadium that used to be Turner Field ), Georgia Southern (always a threat in the Sun Belt), and Kennesaw State, who's now fully transitioned to FBS and has a fun in-state rivalry with West Georgia .
FCS adds even more teams. Mercer in Macon has been building something special. Savannah State has a passionate following down in the coastal part of the state . And West Georgia just completed their transition to Division I and is now officially an active member as of 2027–28.
Then you've got Division II programs like Valdosta State (multiple national championships, incredible atmosphere at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium), Albany State, Fort Valley State, Columbus State, and North Georgia.
Division III includes schools like Emory, Berry, LaGrange, Oglethorpe, and Piedmont.
And there are even NAIA and junior college programs sprinkled throughout the state—Point University, Reinhardt, and Georgia Military College, which has a legit pipeline to FBS schools.
I had no idea the state was this deep with football talent. Every level, every corner of Georgia, there's a game to watch. If you're a football fan, we're so lucky to live here.
