I got a Georgia college scholarship and here's what my essay looked like

My family doesn't have much and I was convinced I'd have to work three jobs and never sleep. 😴

But then I got a Georgia college scholarship from a local women's club in my hometown and it literally changed everything. It's not even that huge – $2,500 – but that's my books and some of my fees covered. Huge weight off. 🎒

Anyway, I had a bunch of people ask me what I wrote about so I'm posting my essay structure here in case it helps anyone:

Intro: I started with a specific moment from my life (helping my little brother with his homework because my parents couldn't). Not generic "I like helping people" stuff. A real story. 📖

Body paragraph 1: What that moment taught me about education and opportunity. Connected it to my goals. Kept it personal but showed I'd thought about bigger issues too. 🧠

Body paragraph 2: What I've done since then. Volunteer work, school stuff, jobs. Not just listing – showing how those experiences built on each other. 🔨

Body paragraph 3: How this Georgia college scholarship would help me specifically. Not just "pay for school" but "let me focus on my education instead of working 30 hours" or "allow me to do this internship that doesn't pay." Be specific!! 🎯

Conclusion: Came back to that opening story. Full circle moment. Tied it to what I want to give back someday. 🔄

The main thing my English teacher told me: show don't tell. Don't say you're determined, show the time you kept going when things were hard. Don't say you care about community, show what you actually did. 📋

I'm applying for a Georgia college scholarship right now and my essay sounds like a robot wrote it. "I am passionate about education. I work hard. I deserve money." Yawn.

Your structure is way better. The helping little brother with homework thing?? That's real. That's memorable. Scholarship readers probably read a million "I want to save the world" essays. A specific story stands out.

Question though – how long was your essay?? Trying to figure out how much detail to include without going over word count.
