Whats up Georgia fam!
I'm a freshman at KSU, first generation college student. My parents help where they can but they don't have much, so I'm trying to figure out how to pay for next year on my own. I have some financial aid, but it's not enough to cover everything.
I keep hearing about student loans but honestly I don't even know where to start. There's like... federal loans, state loans, private loans. What's the difference?? Which ones are better??
I know I have to fill out the FAFSA (already did that) but after that I'm lost. My financial aid award letter mentioned something about "Direct Subsidized Loans" and "Direct Unsubsidized Loans" and I don't know what those words mean. Like, is subsidized good? Unsubsidized bad? Help.
Also, does Georgia have its own loan programs? I saw something online about the "Georgia Student Access Loan" but the website was confusing. Has anyone used that? Is it better than federal loans?
And private loans - should I even consider those? I see ads for Sallie Mae and Discover student loans but everyone says private loans are scary. But what if I need more money and federal isn't enough?
I'm trying to be smart about this because I don't want to graduate with crazy debt like I see people on TikTok crying about. But I also can't just not go to school.
If anyone has a simple explanation of the different loan types and what's best for Georgia students, I would be so grateful. My parents can't help me with this stuff because they never did it. I'm on my own here.
Thanks y'all!
